Study: Diamond from the sky may have come from 'lost planet'

Fragments of a meteorite that fell to Earth about a decade ago provide compelling evidence of a lost planet that once roamed our solar system, according to a study published Tuesday. Researchers from Switzerland, France and Germany examined diamonds found inside the Almahata Sitta meteorite and concluded they were most likely formed by a proto-planet at least 4.55 billion years ago. The diamonds in the meteorite, which crashed in Sudan's Nubian Desert in October 2008, have tiny crystals inside them that would have required great pressure to form, said one of the study's co-authors, Philippe Gillet. "We demonstrate that these large diamonds cannot be the result of a shock but rather of growth that has taken place within a planet," he told The Associated Press in a telephone interview from Switzerland. Gillet, a planetary scientist at the Federal Institute of Technology in Lausanne, said researchers calculated a pressure of 200,000 bar (2.9 million psi) woul...

Mobile emergency alert launch in Canada April 6

In less than a minute Calgary’s Emergency Management Agency (CEMA) can issue an emergency alert that can save lives. But until now, CEMA’s Chief Tom Sampson’s message wouldn’t automatically be sent to smartphone devices. When rising waters flooded southern Alberta in 2013, some were left out. “There were people who didn’t get the messages,” Sampson told Global News. “Some people didn’t understand until the water was at their doorsteps.” It was a similar story for residents of Fort McMurray in May of 2016. Alerts were issued, but only interrupted TV and radio broadcasts. As of April 6, 2018, Canadians with most LTE devices will get those same warnings on their smartphones, in a form similar to text messages. Wireless public alerts have been tested by emergency agencies, and are mandatory across the country. Alerts will sound, unless your device is muted or turned off, for events like natural disasters, extreme weather and terrorist attacks. “When we send a message, we want you t...

China’s abandoned Tiangong-1 space lab to make fiery return to Earth within 24 hours

China’s defunct Tiangong-1 space station is set to become a “splendid” fireball come Monday, according to Chinese authorities. The space lab, which is hurtling toward Earth and is expected to re-enter the atmosphere within the next day, was launched by China’s National Space Administration in 2011 and hosted two crews of Chinese astronauts (otherwise known as taikonauts) in 2012 and 2013. The 10.4-meter-long (34.1-foot)  Tiangong -1, which translates to “Heavenly Palace 1,” was launched six years ago to carry out docking and orbit experiments as part of China’s ambitious space program, which aims to place a permanent station in orbit by 2023. The Tiangong-1 was designed to be operational for just two years, according to Chinese officials. While China originally planned to control Tiangong’s return to earth using its thruster burn, writes The Aerospace Corporation on March 16, 2016, China reported to the United Nations that the station had “ceased functioning.” W...
