My Company Received a Package Meant for a Competitor. Here's How We Turned It Into an Opportunity

I had a disappointing experience with an online retailer recently, who just so happens to be a direct competitor of my business. It was a chance encounter really, a customer accidentally returned items from another online shop to our office. The packaging looked off, however I told the girls to search for the senders name in our database to see if she was a customer of ours as well. Lo and behold, she was. We could have just returned the item to sender, however I saw a golden opportunity to turn this online shopper --who had obviously betrayed us-- into a lifelong customer. I don't know if you know this about me but I am a detective at heart, so I decided to play a little game of super sleuth and call up the competition to inform them that one of their customers had accidentally mailed us their return. I was immediately transferred to the manager because "she would be the one to handle this." I tell her what happened, and she says to me, "Maybe you can get in

4 Reasons to Let Your Employees Do More (So You Can, Too)

Many entrepreneurs start small businesses so they can call the shots--make the decisions, take responsibility, and receive the rewards of those decisions. And that's great--until the business grows, and wearing every hat is not only no longer feasible. Suddenly, you're holding the business back. It's time to delegate, shift authority to the level at which it belongs, let other people step upand put their stamp on the business. Sounds great, right? But it's also really hard, especially when you're used to being in almost-total control. Here are four reasons letting go can help you focus on ways to really grow your business: 1. You're slowing the speed of change. Think of it in production terms. Sometimes the biggest constraint to productivity is you.  Ideas can't be fleshed out until you're available. Decisions can't be made until you're available. Change flows through you--or, when you're too busy, it stops at you. Ask your employees if

If You Don't Do These 5 Things Before Every Negotiation, You've Already Lost

You can be a master of technique, but enter a marathon or a boxing ring without adequate preparation and you're still going to end up losing painfully. The same is true of sitting down at the negotiating table, insisted Morphic Therapeutic CEO and veteran negotiator Praveen Tipirneni on Medium recently. You can (and should) master valuable game-day tricks and techniques, he argues, but negotiations are actually generally won or lost in the weeks and days leading up to the parties meeting face to face. If you want to have a chance of succeeding at any negotiation, there are five essential things to do to prepare. 1. Decide how to value the situation. What are you trying to get out of the deal? If you're not crystal clear on your objectives walking into the room, your chances of walking out of it with a win are close to zero. "The most important thing you can do before a negotiation is figure out exactly what those principles are," explains Tipirneni. "

Headies 2018 winner list: Those that deserve some accolades

After a break in 2017, the most important award show in Nigerian music is back to regular scheduled programming. It’s Headies season 2018! The academy released their perennially contentious nominee list last week and reactions have been pouring in. For those who question whether the award ceremony still carries any of its historic significance, the proof was in the rants of displeased artists who felt left out and were just short of pulling a Charles Okocha and screaming: “We deserve some accolades”, with their fans and handlers as their hype men. In my opinion, however, this year’s list was one of the better put-together lists in the 12 editions of the award show. But there were still some oversights, mostly around technicalities. For instance, being that the Headies didn’t hold in 2017, the year in review was understandably extended to 18 months: July 2016 – December 2017. But even though an album like BrymO’s Klîtóris and singles like Timaya’s “Dance” and Nonso

The declaration included promises to pursue phased military arms reduction, cease hostile acts, transform their fortified border into a peace zone, and seek multilateral talks with other countries including the United States. Dimitri payet inspires Marseille win with two assists

The Ligue 1 side have won eight of their nine games at home in this season's competition.Florian Thauvin headed their opener from ex-West Ham forward Payet's free-kick and Cameroon winger Clinton Njie doubled the lead from a Payet pass. Fredrik Gulbrandsen hit the post for the Austrian Bundesliga leaders. Marseille, who have now scored 34 times in this season's competition, were worthy winners but Rudi Garcia's side had some moments of good fortune. Former Newcastle winger Thauvin appeared to head the ball on to his hand when converting Payet's delivery for his 22nd goal of the campaign. And Salzburg full-back Stefan Lainer looked to have a valid claim for a penalty turned down with the score at 1-0. The Austrians had collected four points against Marseille in the group stage, including a goalless draw in France. But they struggled to contain a Marseille team inspired by Payet for long periods. The 31-year-old has created 16 goals in 36 starts this t

Griezmann secures an away goal for ten man Athletico Madrid

Antoine Griezmann punished Arsenal's lax defence late on as 10-man Atletico Madrid salvaged a draw from the Europa League semi-final first leg at Emirates Stadium. The visitors were on the back foot for almost the entire game after defender Sime Vrsaljko was dismissed for two yellow cards in the first 10 minutes. With Atletico's furious manager Diego Simeone sent to the stands shortly afterwards, the Spanish side survived unscathed to half-time, with Alexandre Lacazette clipping the post with a half-volley the hosts' best chance. Lacazette nodded in Jack Wilshere's cross just after the hour to apparently edge the Gunners closer to a Europa League final send-off for outgoing manager Arsene Wenger. But with eight minutes remaining, Griezmann latched on to a long ball forward, shrugged off Laurent Koscielny and stabbed into the net at the second attempt for an away goal to swing the tie Atletico's way going into the return leg in Madrid next Thursday.
